The Covenantal Transition of Baptism

From the Law to Grace Through Repentance and the Spirit

1. The Old Covenant and the Law

Every person begins under the Old Covenant, under the Law that reveals sin but cannot remove it. The Law was never designed to save — it was designed to reveal.

"For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."
— Romans 3:20
"So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith."
— Galatians 3:24
Key Truth: The Law is a mirror, not a cleanser. It diagnoses the disease of sin but cannot provide the cure.

2. The Baptism of Repentance

John the Baptist called Israel to repent — not introducing the New Covenant, but calling people out of the Old one. His baptism was preparatory, pointing forward to Jesus.

"John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins."
— Mark 1:4
"John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus."
— Acts 19:4
Key Truth: The baptism of repentance is the exit from the Old Covenant, but not yet the entrance into the New.

3. The Transition: Repentance to Spirit

Repentance is not the destination — it is the turning point where faith meets grace. John himself distinguished his baptism from what Jesus would bring.

"I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
— Matthew 3:11
Key Truth: John baptized with water (exit from Old Covenant). Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit (entrance into the New Covenant).

4. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit seals the believer into the New Covenant — the promise foretold by the prophets and fulfilled at Pentecost.

"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
— Acts 2:38
"Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him."
— Romans 8:9
Key Truth: Without the Spirit, there is no New Covenant participation. The Spirit is the seal and guarantee of our inheritance.

5. The Complete Covenantal Picture

The covenantal progression moves in a single direction and cannot be reversed or bypassed:

"Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance."
— Hebrews 9:15
Key Truth: Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant perfectly and established the New Covenant through His blood.

6. Living Under Grace

The believer now lives free from the condemnation of the Law — not free to sin, but free from the power of sin, empowered by the Spirit.

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
— Romans 8:1
"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace."
— Romans 6:14
Key Truth: Grace empowers what the Law could only demand. The indwelling Spirit produces in us what external commands never could.
