What Is Salvation?
Opening Prayer
Father, open our hearts to understand the depths of Your salvation. Help us grasp what You have done for us through Christ and respond with grateful obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Salvation is deliverance from sin and its consequences through Jesus Christ.
Salvation has three dimensions:
(Justification)
(Sanctification)
(Glorification)
Understanding salvation isn't just theological knowledge - it transforms how we live, worship, and relate to God and others.
What You'll Learn
The Human Condition
Why do we need salvation?
Created in God's Image
"Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky...'"
β Genesis 1:26-27Humanity was created good, bearing God's image, designed for relationship with Him.
The Fall Changed Everything
In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve's disobedience brought catastrophic consequences:
- Broken relationship with God
- Sin entered the human race
- Death became our destiny
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
β Romans 3:23"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
β Romans 6:23We Cannot Save Ourselves
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithβand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godβnot by works, so that no one can boast."
β Ephesians 2:8-9The Hard Truth
We were spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1-3), enemies of God, and utterly incapable of rescuing ourselves. We didn't need improvement - we needed resurrection.

God's Redemptive Plan
Salvation was not an afterthought.
"For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ."
β Ephesians 1:4-5Key Phrase: "In Him"
Notice the critical words: "in Him" (in Christ). Before creation, God established that Jesus would be the way of salvation. Those who are "in Him" - who accept Christ - become the chosen ones. God chose the plan, not predestined specific individuals for heaven or hell. Anyone who comes to Christ becomes part of God's chosen people.
Before the foundation of the world, God had already determined that salvation would come through His Son.
"He has saved us and called us to a holy lifeβnot because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time."
β 2 Timothy 1:9Progressive Revelation Through Covenants
God revealed His plan progressively through history:
Abrahamic Covenant
Promise of blessing to all nations through Abraham's seed
Mosaic Covenant
The Law revealed sin and pointed to the need for a Savior
Davidic Covenant
Promise of an eternal King from David's line
New Covenant
Fulfilled in Christ - new hearts, forgiveness, and the Spirit
Fulfilled in Christ
"But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship."
β Galatians 4:4-5Every promise, every prophecy, every covenant finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

The Incarnation
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
β John 1:14God became man - fully divine and fully human - to represent us and redeem us.
His Sinless Life
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we areβyet he did not sin."
β Hebrews 4:15Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live, becoming our righteous representative.
The Cross: Substitutionary Atonement
"He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed."
β 1 Peter 2:24"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
β Romans 5:8Substitution
Jesus took our place. He bore the punishment we deserved so we could receive the righteousness He earned.
The Resurrection
"He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification."
β Romans 4:25The resurrection validated everything - proving Jesus is who He claimed to be and that His sacrifice was accepted.
Ascension and Intercession
"Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them."
β Hebrews 7:25Jesus is still working for us - interceding at the Father's right hand.

Grace: The Source

β Romans 10:9-10Repentance: The Response

β Acts 2:38What Happens When We're Saved
- Regeneration - Born again by the Spirit (John 3:3-8)
- Justification - Declared righteous before God (Romans 5:1)
- Adoption - Made children of God (Galatians 4:4-7)
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

The Fruits of Salvation
Evidence of genuine salvation.
Sanctification: Growing in Holiness
"Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."
β Philippians 2:12-13Sanctification is progressive - we are being transformed into Christ's image day by day.
Assurance: Confident Hope
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
β Romans 8:38-39Good Works: Evidence, Not Cause
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
β Ephesians 2:10Important Distinction
Good works don't earn salvation - they evidence it. We're saved by grace alone through faith alone, but genuine faith never remains alone.
Perseverance: God's Preservation
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand."
β John 10:27-29"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
β Philippians 1:6Those who are truly saved will persevere - not by their own strength, but because God preserves them.

Our salvation is complete - not waiting for a future event, but a present reality:
(2 Cor. 3:18)
(2 Cor. 5:17)
(1 Cor. 6:19)
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?"
β 1 Corinthians 6:19"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
β 2 Corinthians 5:17"And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."
β 2 Corinthians 3:18Present Reality, Not Future Hope
We're not waiting for Christ to return to complete our salvation - He is already here, dwelling in His temple (us). Eternal life began the moment we believed. We have already been raised with Christ. His glory is being revealed in us now.
